About SewBoji

 Where Tradition meets Technology

SewBoji has been a dream of mine since 2015, and in April 2024, that dream became a reality.

I’m Billie Jo Howard Knaack, the proud owner and operator of SewBoji. Quilting runs deep in my family—it’s more than a craft; it’s a tradition. I’m not the first in my family to turn a passion for quilting into a business. After the advent of the rotary cutter in the 1980s, my grandparents designed, cut, pieced, and quilted nearly a thousand quilts, selling them nationwide—long before online stores made it easy! Inspired by their legacy, I’ve built SewBoji to honor their work while weaving in my own modern expertise. With over 25 years of experience as a technologist in corporate roles, I bring innovation to tradition, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary techniques.

Growing up in and eventually returning to the Okoboji, Iowa area has fueled my entrepreneurial spirit. This community—filled with incredible small businesses that serve both seasonal visitors and year-round residents—has been a constant source of inspiration. The name **SewBoji** comes from "Boji," the affectionate nickname for Okoboji, a place known for its breathtaking views, lively atmosphere, and relaxing energy. That same spirit is at the heart of SewBoji.

My quilting journey started with an art piece for my home—I envisioned a small quilt above my fireplace that would bring warmth and color to the space. Since then, I’ve continually refined my craft, exploring new techniques and learning from skilled experts. When I upgraded my machine to include an embroidery arm and computer software integration, I was captivated by the possibilities. Seeing technology modernize my machine while enabling custom designs was exhilarating.

Beyond quilts, I have a deep love for creating bags. The customization options are endless, and they come together much faster than a quilt! While many struggle to balance softness, durability, and style in their designs, I have a knack for navigating those details with ease. I’ve had the privilege of creating sample bags for Old Alley Quilt Shop in Sherburn, MN, as well as teaching bag-making classes, hosting trunk shows, and sharing my expertise. In the summer of 2024, I became a **Certified Sallie Tomato Educator**, and I’m proud to be a member of the **Longarm League—Rookie Year 2024!**

SewBoji is more than a business—it’s the realization of a lifelong dream, rooted in family tradition, modern creativity, and the love of this incredible community.
